A Redditor has apparently seen an impostor website for the Bitcoin (BTC) hardware wallet, Trezor.
“Site imposter trying to steal your Bitcoin”
On October 4, Reddit user castorfromtheva published an article on the website, stating that he had performed a test to confirm that it was not genuine. They said:
“I did a little test of ‘typo’ and I entered ‘tezor [dot] io’ where I obviously omitted the ‘r’. I was instantly redirected to a site called https: // trezor [dot] run / start / which is not the original Trezor site (the correct site is http://trezor.io or https://trezor.io/start/ respectively) “.
The Reddit user said a typo in the URL would redirect the user to the Trezor scam site while possibly installing a compromised firmware.
BTC’s self-proclaimed BTC maximalist engineer, Jameson Lopp, approached Twitter to warn about the fake website. Lopp – which is also CTO in the Bitcoin security keys company, Casa – wrote:
“SECURITY NOTICE Users of the @Trezor web wallet should NOT visit it by typing ‘http://trezor.io’ in their browser – if you type the URL incorrectly you can be redirected to an imposter site that will try to steal your BTC!” Favorites are your friends! “
A malicious application mimics the Trezor hardware wallet
Cointelegraph reported on May 23 that scammers had been adding fake cryptobilleteras to the Google Play store. The malicious application imitated the hardware wallet, Trezor. Although it looked completely legitimate on Google Play, the software itself did not contain any brand of Trezor, with a generic phishing login screen for credentials.
In November 2018, Trezor warned its users after scammers began manufacturing counterfeit versions of their hardware wallets. Company officials acknowledged at that time that “Trezor clones have been released over the years,” but a “fake Trezor device, manufactured by a different and unknown provider” was a surprising discovery.
