Hackers steal more than USD 4 million in cryptocurrencies to exchange house in Singapore.
Bitrue, Singapore’s cryptocurrency exchange, reported on Thursday June 27 that it suffered a computer attack, which resulted in the theft of more than 4 million dollars in XRP and Cardano (ADA). The startup reported through a statement that hackers accessed its hot portfolio and moved funds to other exchange houses.
Through a thread of Twitter, Bitrue detailed that the attackers took advantage of a vulnerability in the risk control system of the platform, gaining access to accounts of approximately 90 users. Thanks to this, the hackers managed to divert 9.3 million XRP (almost USD 4 million) and 2.5 million of the ADA cryptocurrency (approximately USD 230 thousand at the current exchange rate).
The attack was quickly identified and neutralized, according to the Bitrue version. They closed the operations on their platform, putting the site in maintenance mode while they investigated what was happening.
Bitrue reported that it is working with Bittrex, ChangeNOW and Huobi to recover the funds that were transferred to their respective platforms. The team thanked them for freezing the cryptocurrencies related to malicious actions.
Add the statement that the situation is under control and that 100% of lost funds will be returned to users. At the same time, the exchange office recognizes that its team is reviewing its security measures and policies.
The Bitrue website is still inactive, but the company anticipates resuming operations “in a few hours,” according to a recent update on its Twitter account.
Bitrue is one of the 100 main cryptocurrency exchange houses, according to the daily exchange rankings of CoinMarketCap.
Last January, Bitrue administrators also confirmed a 51% attack against Ethereum Classic, in an attempt to withdraw more than 13,000 (ETC) with a value of more than USD 100,000 from the platform’s accounts. However, that attack was frustrated.
