President Donald Trump has signed a defense bill that includes a mandate for a research study on cybernetic applications of blockchain technology.
The $ 700 billion defense bill project was approved by the US Senate in September. It requires a blockchain study by the Secretary of Defense and the presentation of a report that will analyze the cybernetic applications of the technology.
According to the text of the bill:
“No later than 180 days after the enactment date of this Act, the Secretary of Defense, in consultation with the heads of the other agencies and departments that the Secretary deems appropriate, shall submit a report on the possible applications to the committees involved in the Congress. Offensive and defensive cybernetics of Blockchain technology and other distributed database technologies and an assessment of the efforts of foreign powers, extremist organizations and criminal networks to use these technologies.”
The study would also evaluate the use of blockchain technologies by the US government, in the infrastructure networks and the vulnerabilities of these networks to cyber attacks.
In August, a report by The Washington Times suggested that the US Department of Defense began experimenting with blockchain technology to protect itself from cyber attacks. In early May, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) awarded ITAMCO a Phase 1 grant to develop a secure and non-pirate messaging and transaction platform for the US Army.
